Unveiling the Science Behind Weighted Blankets: The Transparent Truhugs Blog

Here, we post temporary references to support the research presented on our shop pages as we are building out our blog. Come see the science behind weighted...

Our blog launch has taken longer than expected, taking from November to December.  We are excited to launch the official launch date of our blog to be on December 11th.  We need a few weeks to organize the research that supports the claims made on the website.

Our blogging goals and aspirations

Our main goal of this blog is to disseminate the science behind weighted blankets. We don’t just plan on presenting wordy abstracts, we will present an unbiased scientist’s perspective on the common questions: a) whether a weighted blanket will work for you, b) how they work, and c) how heavy your weighted blanket should be.

For example, we want to answer questions like:

  • Did the sampling method in a weighted blanket study evaluating the sleep effects on insomniacs include enough subjects so that the outcome of the study could be generalized to all insomniacs, or just that particular group of insomniacs? (like in a case-study design)
  • Even though there was a significant effect mentioned for the study participants overall, what percentage of participants did not experience a significant effect?

Ultimately, we want to help you decide for yourself whether a weighted blanket would be beneficial for you, whether you purchase from us or not.

To support our mission of bringing consumer transparency to the weighted blanket space, we will be reviewing the science behind weighted blankets by publishing two weighted blanket articles per week post-launch in detail, summarizing key findings to our consumers.  If a study says weighted blankets do NOT work to reduce anxiety, we will post this finding as well. It is our hope through concrete value production; our honest, innovative approach will lead to sustainable business practices.

We will also be highlighting how weighted blankets are made, the differences between natural and synthetic materials (hey synthetic has some pros too!) in material construction, and differences between us and our competition.

If you choose to go with someone else because of a positive attribute we highlighted on a synthetic material, we are glad because we helped you find the blanket that’s best for you.  This, in turn, allows us to sell only to customers who really think they would like to give our product a shot, reducing recall and returns.

We hope our efforts (I know, we are minimal in the big scheme of things) support our 15,000-ft view mission of helping contribute to transparent e-commerce consumer marketing practices.  Thank you for your support!

While we get our launch together, please help us investigate these studies yourself to help determine whether weighted blankets work!  References are currently listed by topic and will be updated to include the summary when available.

Please welcome new staff

We are happy to bring on Veronica to assist us in dissecting the science behind weighted blankets in an easy to understand fashion.  Veronica is a licensed mental health professional.  Also, we are happy to work with Elizabeth, an expert in textile sustainability issues whose work has been featured in many journals.  In order to maintain objectivity, we are going to peer-review each other’s work.  We each have our own style, and we will stay true to our individual personalities.

Please, if you have a passion for truth, please contact us for staff positions available.  We are bringing on educated experienced professionals to help with the peer review/editing process of our blog posts.

Jonathan THWB

When my brother started truHugs, I was skeptical as to whether weighted blankets really worked. Using my research background in Kinesiology I quickly dove into the science to discover that weighted blankets, to my surprise, have some documented positive effects during use. Obsessed with product improvement, I promise to use my background in a diverse field of sciences to continually help improve our products for maximum comfort and benefit. I hold a M.S. in Kinesiology and M.B.A. along with 13 industry related certifications.
